About Us

Welcome to Alaska Rain. We own and operate a small home based business in Bethel Alaska. We have been making handmade soap for eight years, and love to make soap, love the outdoors, and try to carry that theme over to our packaging. Soap making alone has kept us very busy. As with most home based businesses, we do all our packaging ourselves, from the graphics layouts, labeling, hand cutting the paper, to wrapping each individual bar of soap. We take pride in our craft, and enjoy every step of making it.

Bethel is a large bush community located on the Kuskokwim River in Western Alaska in the Yukon Delta National Wildlife Refuge. It is about 400 air miles from Anchorage Alaska, and has a population over 6000 people. It is a hub for 56 surrounding villages in the area. There are no roads connecting us with the rest of the world. Travel during the summer months is only by plane or boat, and in the winter months, by snow machine or ice road on the Kuskokwim River. Our supplies are shipped in by daily airfreight service all year long, and by local barge service during the summer months, when the river is ice-free.

The area is very rich in the Yupik' Eskimo culture, and most of the folks, who live here, live a subsistence life style. That includes traditional use of the land, fishing, hunting, gathering berries and wild plants.
